A Century of Commitment to the Frederick, MD, Community
Reliable Recycling Center was founded in 1918 by Maurice Sclar, who originally named the business Reliable Junk Company.
Maurice emigrated from Eastern Europe to Gettysburg, PA, around 1910 to work for his uncle. He traveled south into Frederick County on his horse-drawn wagon, visiting area farms and businesses and purchasing scrap metals and other materials. Over the next several years, he grew fond of the Frederick County area.
In 1918, several citizens convinced Maurice to permanently relocate to Frederick, where he founded Reliable Junk Company. Reliable operated out of various locations in downtown Frederick during its early years, finally purchasing the East Street property in 1948. After several decades of success at the East Street location, Reliable moved to its current location, 8005 Reichs Ford Road, in October 2011.
Through his hard work and commitment to the community, Maurice established himself as a trusted and highly respected citizen and businessman. His legacy was continued by three of his six children, Abraham, Rebecca (Kandel), and Reuben Sclar. Abraham was president of Reliable from 1959 to 1995, when he retired due to illness. Abe’s son, Brian Sclar, became the third-generation president, ultimately becoming Reliable’s sole owner. Brian has recently retired and the company is now headed by his son, Eric Sclar, and daughter, Sara Sclar. The family proudly continues to lead the company into the next century while providing an efficient, environmentally friendly, state-of-the-art recycling facility.
No matter who is at the helm, the Sclar family traditions of honesty, courteous customer service, and pride in our community established by Maurice will always remain the cornerstone of our business.
